Chicago Home Improvement Magazine bestowed the honor of "Makeover of the Month" to one of my favorite projects to date. The contributors to this fine project were Architect Chad Boomgaarden, Wilmette (www.boomarch.com); Designer Rebekah Zaveloff of KitchenLab, Chicago (www.kitchenlab-chicago.com); and built by the Grimsley Group, Chicago (www.grimsleygroup.com)

The article was compiled by Kathy Kidwell and can be seen here.

A-List Movie to Shoot in Wilmette

October 10th, 2010

Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne will shoot scenes for a Soderbergh film in Wilmette on the 600 block of Greenleaf in a residence we designed in 2006, in conjunction with Sterling Wilson Architectural Design & P2 Properties, LLC

This is one of those surreal things that happens from time to time in a persons life that gives a bit a levity to the daily work schedule. It should be an interesting Thanksgiving in Wilmette. The best part of this news is that our house was chosen in part because it was a new residence, with a modern open floor plan, yet the exterior retains the character and context of the neighborhood and looks as if it were designed in the 1920's. Despite explaining this to my wife, she just keeps asking when she gets to meet Matt Damon.

Project can be seen here, and an article describing the movie at North Shore Views.

Thanks, Chicago Home+Garden Magazine!

July 8th, 2010

Wanted to give a big thanks to Chicago Home+Garden for publishing a wonderful layout on one of our favorite KitchenLab projects in conjunction with Boomgaarden Architects on Chicago’s North Shore, in the issue hitting stands now. . The photography Eric Hausman and styling by Diane Ewing is amazing as is the writing by Strange Closet’s Tate Gunnerson. (Speaking of which…you can peer inside all the rooms of this house, if interested, on Strange Closets).  Big thanks to Editor Jan Parr (who mentioned Design in a Bag in her editor’s note) and the whole team at Chicago Home–subscribe today if you don’t already!

Thank You - Open House

Open House Tour Completed... June 6th - 1469 St. Johns Avenue, Highland Park

Intended For: Home owners, neighbors, construction professionals, friends of Building Vision and Boomgaarden Architects, trade partners and vendors, real estate professionals
Organization: Building Vision & Boomgaarden Architects- Residential Design, Renovation and Repair

This Completion Party is celebrated the conclusion of a 16 month ordeal that started with a frozen water pipe while the owners were away for the holidays. The journey took the owners through some false starts and then a connection with Boomgaarden Architects of Wilmette and Building Vision of Evanston. These two, along with a team of more than 25 subcontractors and vendors, transformed a gutted 1905 Craftsman style home into the showpiece on display at this event. What started as a crowded and inefficient layout with structural and mechanical systems that fell way short of current code minimums, became a spacious, modern and efficient new home inside the same masonry shell.

Thanks for joining us to hear more about this transformation and learning some invaluable tips about your homeowner's insurance, and "code upgrade" coverage for your older home. Everyone who attended was entered to win fabulous door prizes such as Cubs/Sox tickets, Eli Cheesecakes, Prairie Grass Cafe gift certificates and an Apple iPad. Thank you to all who attended.
